Spring Beauty Tip: Cleaning Makeup Brushes!

Spring Beauty Tip: Cleaning Makeup Brushes!

Cleaned Your Brushes Lately?

Do you remember the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? Have you noticed your skin breaking out more often than usual? Well, what better time to do a spring clean than the present! When regularly using non-disposable makeup brushes, it's important to keep them clean and sanitized. This is particularly important for those who have blemish prone or oily skin. Brushes collect oils, dead skin cells, dirt and makeup gunk that can breed harmful bacteria causing break outs and even infections.

Keeping to our theme of natural and non-toxic practices, here is a simple and natural way of keeping your brushes squeaky clean without using nasty chemicals.

Things you will need:

  • Dirty makeup brushes
  • Olive oil
  • Natural liquid soap - I like to use organic Cherub Rubs Baby Safe Hair & Body Wash, but any mild organic soap or eco dishwashing liquid is fine.
  • Lemon juice or vinegar (approx 100mls) in bowl or cup
  • Plate
  • Warm water to rinse off
  • Paper towels

While cleaning your brushes, keep in mind that you should be gentle with the brushes to avoid damaging them. Never use boiling hot water to clean or rinse brushes - that's what the lemon/vinegar is for, without stripping or causing the glue holding the bristles to become loose.

Now to the cleaning part!

Step 1: Squeeze some natural liquid soap onto the plate in a swirly pattern and do the same with the olive oil in equal parts

Step 2: Dip the dirty makeup brush in the liquid soap and olive oil mix and run it back and forth across the plate until it stops leaving dirty streaks. This step helps clean the brush, but it’s also great if you have natural bristle brushes as the oil conditions the bristles to keep them soft.

Step 3: Work through the brush using your fingers to squeeze any excess dirty liquid.

Step 4: Dip the brush into the lemon juice/vinegar and swish around to give it a good once over then rinse with water until it runs clear. The lemon juice acidity works as a natural antibacterial!

Step 5: Dab the brush gently to soak up any residual liquid on a clean towel and lay flat on paper towel to dry or bristles down in a cup. Note: allow the brush to air dry naturally - avoid using heat like a hair dryer.

Voila, there you have it. Squeaky clean brushes the natural way! How do you clean yours?
